Liposuction
Liposuction is a widely used and popular cosmetic procedure done to significantly reduce fatty deposits and thus improve the curves and contour of the body. Although not a direct solution for weight loss, liposuction is effective in targeting diet- and exercise-resistant fat deposits such as love handles or stubborn pockets of fat on the legs, thighs and buttocks. The procedure is not an effective weight loss method and definitely not a cure for obesity.
It is advised that you reduce your weight before undergoing liposuction to achieve a positive outcome. Adopting a healthier lifestyle after the operation will ensure lasting results.
Who is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?
The best candidates for liposuction are men and women who are at or near a healthy weight for their height and build, but want to slim down specific areas of stubborn fat — the inner thighs, “saddle bags,” a “muffin top.” Patients considering lipo should be in good overall health and should continue to practice a healthy lifestyle after surgery to maintain their results long-term.
What Areas Can Liposuction Treat?
Common target areas for liposuction include the stomach, hips, thighs and buttocks, although liposuction can improve contours around the arms, knees, neck, chin and even “cankles.” Liposuction can also be used for male breast reduction in men with gynecomastia.
How is Liposuction Performed?
Dr. Kottwitz will make a small incision in the treatment area and insert a thin, hollow tube, known as a cannula. Local or general anesthesia will be administered depending on the size of your treatment area. Based on the type of liposuction you receive, the unwanted fatty tissue, once loosened, is removed through a syringe or via a small vacuum. Though the procedure varies depending on the region of the body targeted, liposuction is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing you to return home the same day.
What can I expect after my liposuction procedure?
Many of our patients considered liposuction for years before finally taking the plunge. Recovery time is shorter with the latest technology and techniques.
Mild to moderate swelling and soreness are normal following liposuction and are occasionally accompanied by bruising. Dr. Kottwitz will ask you to wear a compression garment for a week or two to help alleviate discomfort and keep swelling to a minimum, which speeds the healing process. Though most patients can return to work and their daily routine in a week, strenuous physical exercise and heavy lifting should be postponed until 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.
