breast implant removal
Breast implant removal is a surgical procedure to remove breast implants from a patient who has previously undergone breast augmentation or breast reconstruction.
There are many different reasons for removal of breast implants:
You don’t want implants anymore
- You can always decide to have implants removed. Some patients have gained breast tissue since their original breast augmentation and no longer need the extra volume. Other patients simply do not want their implants anymore, and this is an acceptable reason to have breast implants removed.
BIA-ALCL
- Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma is a very rare type of breast cancer that has been linked to some textured implants. Symptoms of this cancer include swelling or fluid around the implant. Dr. Kottwitz can help navigate workup and management of these symptoms as well as help guide you in the proper management of textured implants.
BII
- Breast Implant Illness is a diagnosis that is still being closely studied. Some patients feel like their implants are making them sick and find that symptoms improve once the implants are removed. Sometimes, the capsule surrounding the implant is also removed. Dr. Kottwitz can help guide you in the management of Breast Implant Illness.
About the Breast Implant Removal Procedure
There are many options in the removal of breast implants. Some implants can be removed with numbing medication in the office. However, if removal of the capsule around the implant is necessary, general anesthesia is required. In addition, some patients may want to undergo a Breast Lift or Auto Augmentation Breast Lift at the same time as the removal of implants. Dr. Kottwitz can help you decide if such a procedure is indicated.
What is Recovery Time Like?
Some discomfort is normal and can be alleviated with prescribed or over-the-counter medication. Post-surgical swelling can take up to 4 weeks to heal; however, daily activity, such as walking, showering, etc., can resume a day after surgery.
While everyone’s recovery time is different, most patients recover within a week to ten days. High-impact exercises and strenuous activity should be avoided for several weeks. If you have a physically strenuous job, you may want to take more time off.
